How is a bead made?

Here are six major items needed to make a bead. These items include: a torch, fuel, glass rods, kiln, bead release and mandrels. Mandrels are stainless steel rods of varying diameters that are used to wrap the molten glass around. Each mandrel is dipped in a solution called bead release prior to making any beads. Per its name, bead release helps keep the beads from sticking to the mandrels. Once the mandrels have been dipped, the torch is used to heat up the rods of glass to a melting temperature. Once the glass is molten, it becomes pliable and soft. The molten glass is then wound around the dipped mandrel until the desired bead size is obtained. The heat of the torch and gravity will naturally pull the bead into a round shape. Various lampworking tools are used to manipulate the beads into a variety of other shapes (i.e., cubes, tiles, lentils, hearts, barrels...). Once the bead is finished, it is placed in a kiln to anneal overnight. The next day, the bead is removed from the mandrel, which is how the "hole" is created. And…Voila! I create Vivian's Vision jewelry designs from the beads!

What is annealing?

Annealing is a process which removes the stress that forms within a bead while the bead is being created. When a bead cools down, the inner temperature is much higher than the temperature of the bead's surface. This creates stress which can cause the bead to crack. As such, the entire bead needs to be brought to the same temperature and "held" there for an extended period of time. This is known as "soaking". A kiln is programmed to keep beads hot (let them "soak") and then slowly bring down the temperature over time. Doing this removes the stress that can form within the bead and will ultimately make the bead stronger and more durable. There are alternatives to annealing in this manner, but none of them are as effective as soaking a bead in a kiln as soon as it was made.

Colors/Representation

I have done my very best to represent my jewelry designs accurately. Please know that the calibration of various computer monitors can differ substantially. Thus, there may be slight discrepancies between the color you are viewing and the actual color of the jewelry you are purchasing. Gemstones regularly vary in color, size and shape. Also, I do not attempt to represent the exact size of the jewelry in the photographs. All sizes are noted in inches in the description.
I have done my best to describe Vivian's Vision Jewelry Designs accurately. All necklace lengths are from the top of the clasp to the opposite end. If you have any questions regarding size and scale, please contact me before ordering.  I am happy to help you make the right decision regarding an item. How do I take care of my Vivian's Vision jewelry?

  • Here are some tips to keep your jewelry in top shape!
  • Store any jewelry with sterling silver in an air tight container or plastic Ziplock bags. This helps prevent tarnish.
  • Don't store your jewelry in direct sunlight or even bright lights
  • Do not drop your jewelry on hard surfaces such as tile, stone or brick.
  • Always put your jewelry on last.
  • You may polish sterling silver with polishing cloths but do not dip the entire jewelry design in jewelry cleaners as they may damage any surface design of the glass beads.

Do you have a mailing list?

Yes! You can sign up to receive all of the latest Vivian's Vision news & exclusive offers.

What do you do with the email address on your mailing list? Why should I sign up?

The mailing list is for my eyes only! Your email address will never be sold or given away for promotional soliciting. I will send you updates on what is happening at Vivian's Vision, discounts and coupons that won't be available on the site.

  • Princess (17-19 inches)
The princess necklace is best suited for crew and high necklines, falling just below the throat. Typically the 17-19 inch length is worn as a contrast to low, plunging necklines. Add a pendant for a bold, eye-catching look.
  • Matinee (20-24 inches)
Longer than the princess necklace, and slightly shorter than an opera length, a 20-24 inch matinee necklace is the right choice for casual or business dress.

Wrist Sizing

To determine bracelet and watch size, measure the wrist with a flexible tape measure just below the wrist bone, where you would place your wrist watch and measure snug (See image). Now add 1 - 1.25". This is approximate sizing and not a guarantee of prefect sizing.

If this bracelet is a gift for an adult or young lady, and you don't know wrist size, we would consider 7 as petite, 7.25 as small, 7.5 as medium, 7.75 as large, and 8.0 as XLarge. Our average appears to be 7.25 to 7.5 ins.

Little Sizes
To determine little sizes, measure the wrist and add 1/2" for ages 3 and under.
Add 3/4" for ages 3 and over OR use the approximate sizing below.

Wire Gauges

Having the right wire size – or gauge makes a difference in the completed Vivian’s Vision jewelry design.

Here’s a tip: the larger the number, the smaller the diameter of the wire. Generally, 20 to 24g wires are used for wire wrapping.

12g - Very Heavy – good for rings – hard to work with

14g - Heavy – often used as a base to wrap finer wires around

16g - Heavy – often used as a base to wrap finer wires around

18g - Heavy – used when you need a heavier look

20g - Medium Heavy – perfect for larger beads, ear wires or clasps

22g - Medium – Typically used for glass beads – also fits some gemstones and pearls

24g - Fine – easy to work with – use for gemstones and pearls

26g - Extra fine – use this for very delicate projects

Wire Temper

Wire Temper is used to measure the amount of spring in the wire.

Soft temper is ideal for making wire beads. It does not have spring when bent.

Half-Hard is used for basic wirework, has some spring but very workable; holds its shape well.

Gold Filled vs. Gold Plated

Gold Filled chain is made by bonding a layer of real gold alloy to a base metal (normally brass), then rolling or drawing the metal to the desired thickness and shape. It is not like the gold-plating process. Gold-plating uses an electro-chemical process to place a thin molecule of gold, or often something that isn't real karat-gold, but which leaves a gold color, onto the base metal.

Gold filled items have a long life and can be worn by most people without allergic reaction. All of our gold filled items are made with 14k gold.
